Ancient Roman dice, probably ivory or some other animal bone, 2nd-3rd century AD, found in grave at necropolis in Viminacium site, near Kostolac, eastern Serbia.
Viminacium was fortified Roman city which had around 50 000 inhabitants, capital of Roman province Moesia Superior and military camp where VII Claudia Legion was stationed, built in 1st century AD.
Site covers area of several hundreds of hectares, and so far only few percentage have been excavated. Serbian archaeologists say that there is enough material for the next 100 years of digging and exploration.
So far they have found more than 13 000 graves and tombs at Viminacium necropolis, dating back to 4th century BC, which makes it the largest Roman cemetery in the world.
Unfortunately, many graves were found at the foot of a massive coal-fired power station, and archaeological excavations are being carried out before another unit of the electricity plant is built on the site of an ancient Roman city.
